Julia Garner has confirmed that the long-anticipated Madonna biopic remains in development, and that she is still attached to portray the Queen of Pop.
The project, first announced in 2020, has undergone multiple revisions but has not been abandoned. Garner explained that it is “still a work in progress,” giving assurance that the film is moving forward despite earlier reports of delays.
She also spoke about the intensity of the casting process. Without formal dance training, she prepared choreography and sang during her audition, performing directly for Madonna herself. Garner recalled reminding herself to channel Madonna’s own fearlessness, thinking, what would Madonna do? She approached the moment with complete confidence, concluding that she had to “own it” in order to secure the role.
Although the production has yet to announce a release date, Madonna continues to be closely involved in shaping the screenplay. Garner’s casting remains central to the project, with her reputation for portraying complex, uncompromising characters making her a compelling choice for such an iconic role.
The biopic is expected to cover Madonna’s early years, her arrival in New York, and her rise to international superstardom. With Garner confirmed in the lead, anticipation continues to build for one of the most ambitious portrayals of a music legend in recent years.
