Spring Reset: Start Your Day With a Glass of Water

Spring has long been marked on the calendar, but only now does it begin to feel tangible. With it comes a natural inclination toward new beginnings. Often, those beginnings are not defined by drastic changes, but by small, consistent habits. Something as simple as starting the day with one or two glasses of water can set that tone.

Both mental and physical well-being are shaped by repetition rather than intensity. When the day feels overwhelming, the most effective approach is often the most minimal one. Drinking water first thing in the morning is a modest act, yet one that establishes clarity and balance from the outset.

Dr Emily Leeming, author of Genius Gut, highlights the impact of morning hydration, noting that consuming around 500 millilitres of water early in the day is an accessible way to support overall well-being. Research suggests that incorporating fluids into a morning routine has a measurable effect on mood, energy levels, and cognitive function.

A study published in 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health examined this connection more closely. Participants, all young adults, were deprived of fluids for 12 hours overnight. In the morning, they were given varying amounts of water, after which their cognitive performance and emotional state were assessed.

The results were direct. A single glass of water, approximately 200 millilitres, was enough to reduce thirst, fatigue, and irritability. Two glasses showed additional benefits, including improved working memory, which plays a key role in decision-making, problem-solving, and maintaining focus. Those who did not drink water reported higher levels of fatigue and irritability.

Water remains a fundamental component of the human body, accounting for roughly 60 to 70 percent of its total weight. Every system depends on adequate hydration to function efficiently. After eight hours of sleep, drinking water simply restores what the body requires to operate at its baseline.

In practical terms, the habit is easy to implement. Keep a glass or a jug of water by your bedside. Upon waking, drink water before moving into the rest of your routine, including brushing your teeth. It is a small adjustment, but one that introduces a sense of structure and care into the very beginning of the day.
