If you find yourself in Catalonia, Salvador Dalí’s house in Port Lligat is worth the detour.
Built from a single fisherman’s hut acquired in 1930, the house was expanded over time by Salvador Dalí and Gala Dalí through the addition of adjoining structures. The result is a sequence of connected rooms that follow the line of the bay rather than a formal plan.

Inside, the layout shifts quickly. Narrow corridors open into irregular rooms. Staircases rise, turn, and reappear. Floors adjust in height from one space to the next, preserving the structure of the original huts.

Windows of varying sizes face the Mediterranean, holding a consistent view of the water across the house. The sea remains visible from multiple rooms, while the opposite side opens onto a dry, sparse landscape.

The studio is positioned directly toward the water, with a large window set to receive steady daylight. Easels, tools, and canvases remain in place, arranged within the working space.

Throughout the house, objects are left as they were. Upholstered seating sits close to the walls. Woven carpets follow uneven floors. Candles line ledges and tables. Sculptural elements appear among everyday items. Preserved seabirds stand indoors. Personal belongings remain visible across rooms.

The house functioned as Dalí’s residence and studio until 1982. After Gala’s death, he moved to Púbol, leaving the house intact. It has since been opened as a museum, maintaining its original arrangement.
